New Details Emerge in Attack That Killed US Soldier in Somalia

Tuesday June 12, 2018FILE - Somali military officers attend a training program by the United Arab Emirates at their military base in Mogadishu, Somalia, Nov. 1, 2017.
New details have emerged about an attack by al-Shabab militants that killed one U.S. soldier and injured four others in southern Somalia last week.Somali officials say the attack occurred just before 2 p.m. local time Friday as U.S., Kenyan and Somali forces set up a combat outpost two kilometers north of the town of Sanguni, in the Lower Jubba region.Mukhtar Abdiweli Moahmed, a unit commander with the Somali forces in Sanguni, told VOA Somali that the soldiers were in the outpost when the militants fired a series of mortars at the camp.“They fired about four mortars rounds from the other side of the [Jubba] river, and one of them hit the U.S. soldier,” he said.Ads By Google The Pentagon has identified the deceased soldier as Staff Sgt. Alexander Conrad, 26, of Arizona. The military’s Africa Command said the four wounded service members received medical treatment and were in the care of the U.S. embassy medical team in Kenya.Sanguni is an agricultural town that sits on the equator. It has been the scene of several confrontations in the past between al-Shabab and Somali forces accompanied by U.S. advisors.Moahmed said due to flooding in the area, the soldiers set up the combat outpost in an open space. He said it was possible the militants could see the U.S. service members before firing the mortar rounds.A second Somali officer who did not want to be named said shrapnel from a mortar hit Conrad in the chest. One of the other U.S. soldiers was hit in the legs by the shrapnel, he said. After firing the mortar rounds, al-Shabab also fired heavy machine guns, wounding a Somali soldier, he said.He said it was not the first time they received mortar fire from al-Shabab. He said the militants fired mortars the night before and again on Saturday, the day after the attack when they fired three rockets. Also on Saturday the militants sent a vehicle-borne improvised explosives device to the camp to detonate, but Somali soldiers intercepted and blew it with a rocket propelled grenade, Mohamed said. The officer said al-Shabab knew the soldiers had moved in to the area. He said they too knew about al-Shabab's presence on the opposite side of the riverbank. “We know their locations and numbers, they know our movements, it’s an open secret,” he said.He said the militants in the area operate in small numbers, and move around to conduct hit-and-run attacks. In a separate incident, at least five Somali soldiers were killed and three others injured Monday in Teed, 30 kilometers (19 miles) north of Huddur, the regional capital of Bakool region, officials said. The mayor of Huddur, Mohamed Moallim Ahmed, told VOA that al-Shabab attacked a Somali military camp at mid-morning today. Al-Shabab said its forces overran the camp but there has been no independent confirmation.Al-Shabab, an al-Qaida-linked radical group, has intensified its attacks during the month-long observance of Ramadan.Despite the attack in Sanguni, U.S. officials say the Somali and Kenyan forces were able to complete the outpost, and that the Somali government will be able to use it to push al-Shabab from the region. The death of the U.S. soldier in Somalia is the second in the past two years. In May 2017, a U.S. Navy SEAL was killed near the village of Dar e Salam in Somalia's Lower Shabelle region.

FGM law change call from 'persecuted' Somali women

Tuesday June 12, 2018Zainab Nur said Somali women are being "stigmatised and racially profiled" by FGM history
Women from Wales' Somali community are being "persecuted for the crime of our ancestors" and are calling for a change to female genital mutilation (FGM) law.Healthcare workers in Wales have been required by legislation to report any children they believe to be at risk of FGM to social services since 2014.Campaigners say FGM is now a thing of the past in Somali communities and want to stop being "racially profiled".The Welsh Government said safeguarding is "sensitive to culture and religion".Ads By Google FGM is illegal in the UK and figures show there were less than 17 cases of FGM in under 18s recorded by Welsh health boards last year. The cases, revealed in a BBC Freedom of Information request, were in children who had been born outside the UK and not in established British-African communities.'Mortified by the accusations'One two-year-old was born with complex care needs and has been in and out of hospital her entire life.During one spell in intensive care her family were called to an urgent meeting and feared the worst, only to be told by doctors they suspected that she had been subjected to FGM.Her aunt says the whole family were angry they had been accused of such an act,"I was thinking why are we being interrogated?" she said. "Why are we being asked these intrusive questions?"My sister was shocked, my mum was mortified by the accusations."The family had to take the girl for a physical examination with a specialist before doctors agreed that no FGM had taken place. It is a story that campaigners in Cardiff's Somali community say is not uncommon in Wales since 2014, when a new law meant all health care workers were obliged to report any children they suspect to be at risk of FGM."Shocked"Hamda was shocked when a health visitor referred her to social services after she had a baby girl, even though she told the health worker she had no intention of doing FGM to her."I felt as though my opinion didn't matter," she said."I was from a certain culture, a certain community and the assumption was made that I was definitely going to do it, that's what it seemed like."I am educated - why would I do that to my daughter?"Cardiff and Vale Health Board said it did not discriminate between race or culture as "mandatory questions are asked of women of all ethnicities".Campaigner Zainab Nur said FGM was widespread in Cardiff's Somali community 30 years ago but said the practice in their community has stopped."It was always known that 99 per cent of girls were done, but we're continuing to be persecuted for the crime of our ancestors," said Ms Nur."We're being stigmatised and racially profiled. Its being classed as an epidemic when it's not an epidemic."But health professionals say the rules around spotting children at risk were vital.Janet Fyle, from the Royal College of Midwives, said: "Once a child has FGM you can't go back and correct that, so we need to protect the children - not at all costs, we need to do so sensitively."We are not condemning any particular community and I think we should not give in to people suggesting what it is we need to do in terms of protecting children."

Tuesday June 12, 2018At least four Somali soldiers were killed in an attack by al-Shabab on a military base in Teed village, about 30 kilometers northwest of Hudur town in Bakol region in southern Somalia, officials said Monday.Mohamed Moalim Ahmed, Mayor of Hudur town, said that al-Shabab fighters had launched heavy attack on the base but the forces managed to push them back."They (al-Shabab) have attacked us, but our forces fought back and repulsed them. We are now in control of the base," Moalim said.Ads By Google The local official noted that they inflicted casualties on the al-Shabab side, but did not know the number of their losses. Residents in nearby villages told Xinhua that they heard huge exchange of gunfire in the area."The two sides have exchanged huge gunfire and engaged a gun battle lasted for hours," Yusuf Eney, a resident told Xinhua. The militant group al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it had seized the village of Teed, a claim which officials have denied.Independent sources said the militants briefly took control of the military base before they were overpowered by the soldiers.
