Saturday June 16, 2018Forces from a Saudi and Emirati led coalition have captured the airport in Yemen's port city of Hudaida, military officials announced on Twitter. In a post on Saturday, an account associated with the Saudi-alligned Yemeni military said the airport had been "freed from the grip of the Houthi militia" and that de-mining operations were ongoing.Hudaida airport is located just to the south of the city-proper with heavy fighting still ongoing on Hudaida's southern edges.Ads By Google Houthi sources have not yet confirmed their loss of the airport. Heavy fighting has left at least 39 people dead as of Thursday, including 30 Hourthi rebels, and nine pro-government troops.Rebels have instructed civilians to move away from the outskirts of the city and towards the city centre.Hudaida is home to about 600,000 people and a port responsible for 70 percent of imports into Yemen, raising fears the fighting could ignite a humanitarian catastrophe. The UN Security Council has expressed its "deep concern" over the fighting and UN officials have warned of a risk of famine.Adana Dieng, UN special adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, said the attack on Hudaida could heighten the risk of famine."The Yemeni port (of Hudaida) is a lifeline for the delivery of aid and the Coalition's air attacks can kill many more people over time through famine and hunger when damaging such civilian infrastructure," Dieng said in a statement.More than 22 million people in Yemen are in need of aid, including 8.4 million who are at risk of starvation, according to the UN, which considers Yemen to be the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

A delegation led by the new Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed, has arrived in the Somali capital Mogadishu amid tight security.
Ahmed was received at the airport by Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo.
In a message posted on Twitter, Farmajo told the Ethiopian prime minister: “Welcome to Mogadishu your Excellency it’s an honor to host you and your delegation. I am confident you’ll find your stay comfortable and joyous.”
The chief of staff to Ahmed also tweeted: “M Abiy brought the message of Ethiopian solidarity and friendship with the resilient people of Somalia.”
After receiving guard of honor at the airport, Ahmed was driven to the presidential palace in Mogadishu where the two leaders are holding talks.
Security has been tightened with the deployment of Somali troops along major roads in Mogadishu. All major roads leading to the airport and the palace have been closed to the public.
Ethiopia has more than 4,200 troops who are officially serving as part of the African Union Mission in Somalia. In addition, several thousand Ethiopian troops operate in various parts of Somalia outside of the AMISOM mandate but under a bilateral agreement with Somalia.
Ahmed is the second Ethiopian leader to visit Somalia. In June 2007, former Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi visited Mogadishu after his soldiers helped the Somali government topple the Islamic Courts Union that briefly ruled the capital.

Egyptian goalkeeper refuses Man of the Match award because it's sponsored by Budweiser

Saturday June 16, 2018
Egyptian goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy was almost perfect against Uruguay on Friday. He made save after save for 89 minutes of the match, until Jose Gimenez managed to get one through and Egypt lost to Uruguay 1-0.
Despite the one missed save, El-Shenawy’s performance earned him the coveted Man of the Match award for his incredible performance. However, according to Twitter user Marwan Ahmed, who works for the Egyptian sports site KingFut, El-Shenawy refused to accept the award — which is sponsored by Budweiser —because he is Muslim. Ahmed even managed to snap a photo of El-Shenawy politely turning down the award while a the guy who was trying to give it to him stands there awkwardly, not knowing what to do.
There was no alcohol actually in the award, and El-Shenawy didn’t have to drink any Budweiser to accept it (though the award is in the shape of a goblet). But since his religion forbids the consumption of alcohol, he elected not to accept the award because it was sponsored by a beer brand.
Egypt is a majority Muslim country, so not only are their laws on alcohol sales strict, drinking alcohol is generally not accepted. There are four other World Cup countries with similar attitudes on alcohol due to Islamic dietary laws: Senegal, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and Iran. As Ahmed pointed out, any Man of the Match winners from those countries might also refuse the award.

Somalia, Ethiopia to jointly invest in four seaports on the Red Sea

Abdi SheikhSaturday June 16, 2018

MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Somalia and Ethiopia announced they were jointly investing in four seaports to attract foreign investment to their two countries, the latest move in a tussle for access to ports along one of the world’s most strategic waterways.
After Somalia’s president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo hosted Ethiopia’s prime minister Abiy Ahmed for a meeting at the presidential palace in Mogadishu, the two leaders issued a joint statement of pledges to cooperate on everything from the development of infrastructure including roads linking the two countries to expanding visa services to promote cultural exchanges.
The statement did not elaborate on which ports the two countries would develop.
The Horn of Africa’s Red Sea coastline extending north of Somalia through Djibouti and Eritrea toward the critical Suez Canal is already dotted with ports owned or run by countries locked in a regional struggle: the United Arab Emirates and its ally Saudi Arabia on one side, and Turkey which backs Qatar on the other.
Ads By Google Landlocked Ethiopia, which has a population of 100 million, has been led since April by 41-year-old former intelligence officer Abiy, who has moved swiftly to assert his nation’s interests on the international stage.
“The leaders further agreed to invest in logistics and service provision specially to leading ports in the continent that can serve both the Indian ocean and the Red Sea,” the statement read.
The day before Abiy’s visit to Somalia, the United Arab Emirates pledged to give $3 billion to Ethiopia in aid and investments, in a major show of support for the new leadership in Ethiopia.
The strengthened partnership between Ethiopia and the oil-rich Gulf monarchy is significant in the context of Addis Ababa’s ties with Mogadishu.
Somalia and the UAE have been at odds for months over the broader dispute in the Gulf region.
That Middle Eastern feud is driving the desire to control the Horn of Africa and its waters, diplomats, businessmen, scholars and Somali officials have told Reuters.
In May, Ethiopian state media reported that Ethiopia had taken an unspecified stake in the port of Djibouti, its main gateway for trade.
