Sunday June 17, 2018A former Ottoman barrack will be turned into Turkey’s biggest library with a capacity of 7 million books in Istanbul, an official from Turkish Culture Ministry told Anadolu Agency."The plan is to construct Turkey's biggest library and book valley. Once [the project is] complete, it will also be a candidate for the biggest library in the world," Coskun Yilmaz, provincial director of culture and tourism, said. When the restoration process completes at the historic building, of which Anadolu Agency has shot aerial footage, it will become one of the attractions of Istanbul’s culture and arts field with its 220,000 square meters area of use.The historic Rami Artillery Quarters was built in the 1770s in Eyup district on the European side of the city.Ads By Google Earlier this month, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the project, which is also mentioned in the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party’s election manifesto.“We are making efforts to encourage our generation to [read] books,” Erdogan said. The library will have reading rooms, exhibition halls, cafes, cinemas, and stores."There will be spaces inside where visitors can sit and spend long hours,” Yilmaz said. The library will host a section for children and collectors, and hold books on art and the city.A museum will tell visitors the history of books starting from the invention of paper, he said. The parking lot will have a capacity of 1,250 vehicles. The project, expected to cost 200 million Turkish liras ($43.3 million), will open in 2020.Yilmaz said the first phase of the project has already been completed and now work on the second phase was continuing. He added that the third and fourth phases were in the process of planning.According to a 2017 report published by Turkish Statistical Institute, Turkey has around 29,000 libraries across the nation. It includes one national library, 1,137 public libraries, and over 500 university libraries.

Sputnik News Sunday June 17, 2018Today, Finnish passports are issued to foreigners six times more often than in the 90s, and almost all new holders are dual citizens. This is more than in any given year since Finland's independence, a development the leader of the right-wing Finns Party finds worrisome.Over the past two decades, the number of new citizens has been rising exponentially. While only 2,000 people a year gained Finnish citizenship in the 1990s, in 2017, the figure exceeded 12,000, a record high. The right-wing Finns Party is worried over the development. Party chairman Jussi Halla-aho said that Finnish citizenship should "show recognition of one's successful integration" and one's commitment to Finland and "Finnishness.""It cannot be a gift you get easily, it's no way of coaxing immigrants to integrate," Jussi Halla-aho said, as quoted by the newspaper Hufvudstadsbladet.insidenewsHalla-aho also argued that the rapid distribution of Finnish citizenship to foreigners makes it difficult to monitor how integration is progressing. This, he ventured, was a way of concealing failed integration and mistakes in the nation's migration policy."Somalis and Iraqis belong to the most disadvantaged in Finland, if one looks at the employment figures. The fact that they are among those who get Finnish citizenship the most is a big controversy," Halla-aho said, demanding stricter immigration rules and nationality policies.Lastly, Halla-aho also stressed that several people of foreign descent were internationally suspected of terrorist offences, thus undermining the credibility of the Finnish passport and Finns as low-risk entrants.A record 12,219 non-Finnish applicants were granted passports in 2017, according to Statistics Finland. This marks an increase of 30 percent over the previous record year, 2016.The majority of the new Finnish citizens are aged 30-32 years, and women outnumber men. Russians account for the largest number of new Finnish passport holders, followed by Somalis, Iraqis and Estonians.Almost all of the applicants for Finnish citizenship also strive to retain their previous nationality. Last year, 98 percent of new passport recipients held dual citizenship. In 2017, there were a total of 117,024 dual passport holders living in Finland, 11 percent more than the year before.According to Statistics Finland, 365,000 people living in Finland, a nation of 5.5 million, had a foreign background in 2016.The Finns Party, previously known as the True Finns, which is still the party's official name in Finnish and Swedish, is a nationalist-oriented party founded in 1995. Having spent two decades in opposition, they joined the coalition government in 2015. In 2017, the party suffered a schism, as half of the party's MPs (including former party leader and Foreign Minister Timo Soini) left the parliamentary group and subsequently forfeited their membership, forming the Blue Reform party.

“Minnesota men” appeal their convictions

$

Powerline Sunday June 17, 2018The three “Minnesota men” who were convicted after a three-week trial in federal court in Minneapolis appealed their convictions to the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. I covered the trial every day on Power Line and following the convictions in the Weekly Standard article “‘Minnesota men’ on trial.”The Eighth Circuit heard oral argument in the appeals this past Thursday morning before a three-judge panel including Judges Loken, Gruender and Erickson. Stephen Montemayor covered the oral argument here for the Star Tribune. The Eighth Circuit has posted audio of the oral argument oral argument posted online here (60 minutes). The argument was scheduled in one of the Eighth Circuit courtrooms in the Minneapolis federal courthouse where the case was tried. During trial, Somali and other supporters of the defendants held protests against the charges outside the courthouse and packed the courtroom. On appeal, Somali supporters of the defendants resumed their position outside (at right).Listening to the oral argument, I don’t think any of the defendants challenged the sufficiency of the evidence or adequacy of the jury instructions to support their convictions on the charge of conspiring and attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. (One defendant raises an issue on appeal regarding his counsel at trial.) Local supporters of the defendants nevertheless deem law enforcement, the law, the charges and the convictions unjust. The three defendants appealing their convictions challenge one prong of the jury instruction on conspiracy to commit murder overseas. Judge Loken seems to agree with the defendants’ argument on this point. Even assuming the jury instruction was inadequate, however, I think it was harmless error. The evidence introduced at trial overwhelmingly supported the proposition that these guys wanted to join ISIS to wage jihad and kill infidels. They thrilled to the notion. Murder is precisely what drove their travel plans.Assistant United States Attorney John Docherty makes this point at 48:00 to 50:00 of the oral argument. “There’s not a scrap of evidence that the defendants were going to Syria to do anything but kill for ISIL,” Docherty argued, “just as what some defendants who did make it over there wound up doing.” That is indeed the case.No one showed up outside the courthouse to support law enforcement. Only the local Somali champions of our convicted ISIS wannabes turned out to demonstrate their support. We have a problem here hiding in plain sight.

Ookla Reveals Ranking of Best and Worst Airports for Getting Online

Sunday June 17, 2018

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Ookla, the global leader in mobile and broadband network testing and analysis, today released their annual North American airport rankings that reveals the airports with the fastest free Wi-Fi. The results indicate that the Pacific Northwest has taken the top spot on the podium, with Seattle-Tacoma International unseating previous champion, Denver International, as the airport with the fastest, free Wi-Fi in the U.S. and Canada.
“Nothing improves a traveler’s trip quite like reliably fast Wi-Fi can,” said Ookla Co-founder and GM Doug Suttles. “What our comprehensive analysis shows is that surprisingly only a few airports across the U.S. and Canada have recognized just what an impact this can have. Wi-Fi speed can make all the difference for the business traveler finalizing a presentation or a family downloading videos to keep their kids occupied.”
Ads By Google The company looked at test results taken on their flagship application, Speedtest, from January through April 2018. To be considered in the analysis, a test had to be taken on the free Wi-Fi network available at each airport. The analysis also compares this year’s speeds with those outlined in last year’s report (from March through May 2017). This juxtaposed data demonstrated big improvements for some and ousted others whose networks are in need of serious improvement to get travelers online.
Seattle has usurped the title of fastest airport Wi-Fi in North America from Denver, a strong contender that previously held the title for two years running. Seattle can now also boast being faster than the other global winners recognized in Ookla’s 2017 report, including Gold Coast Airport in Australia, Congonhas-SaÞo Paulo Airport in Brazil, Dubai International, Seoul Incheon International Airport in South Korea, Sheremetyevo International Airport in Russia and Mohammed V International Airport in Morocco.
And, while most airports offer free Wi-Fi nowadays, what the Ookla North America Airport Ranking makes clear is that not all Wi-Fi offerings are equal. Take the mean download speed at Montréal–Pierre Elliott Trudeau International, it remains stuck at the bottom of the list, despite a massive percentage improvement. There were also many airports that actually saw significant declines in Wi-Fi speeds, including: Detroit (58.9% decline), Miami (27.1% decline) and Dallas Fort Worth (25.6% decline).
