Scores dead or missing in Indonesia ferry accident

Wednesday July 4, 2018Some 70 people are dead or missing after a ferry ran aground off the coast of Indonesia, according to an updated official toll Wednesday, the latest deadly maritime accident in the Southeast Asian archipelago. The KM Lestari was carrying about 140 passengers and dozens of vehicles when damage to its hull forced the captain to ground the vessel on Tuesday afternoon about 300 metres (985 feet) off Selayar island, near the larger island of Sulawesi.TERRIFIED PASSENGERSImages from the scene showed terrified passengers clinging to the side of the tipped over ferry, while others floated in the sea awaiting help.Waves swamped the boat's deck, sweeping trucks and other vehicles overboard, as rescuers battled high winds and rough seas to pluck victims from the water.Indonesia's disaster agency said 29 people died in the accident while another 41 are still missing. Nearly 70 people have been rescued, it added.BAD WEATHERA fleet of smaller boats, including local fishing vessels, worked to save passengers as bad weather prevented larger craft from approaching the stricken ferry, the transportation ministry said.Ads By Google It added that most passengers had been wearing life jackets."The last passengers on board the boat were evacuated this morning about 12.05am," Agus H. Purnomo, a director at the ministry of transportation, said in a statement."The captain and ship owner were the last two people to get off the ship."MISSING PASSENGERSRescuers are still scouring the coastline for missing passengers. The 48-metre vessel was sailing from Sulawesi to nearby Selayar island when strong winds and high waves caused damage to its portside hull and it began taking on water. The captain deliberately ran the boat aground close to shore in an effort to reduce drowning at sea, the transportation ministry said. The ship was also carrying some $2 million worth of rupiah currency destined for a local bank branch on Selayar to pay local civil servants a bonus. The money and the two officials tasked with guarding it were missing, South Sulawesi acting governor Sumarsono, who goes by one name, told CNN Indonesia TV, adding that the authorities were searching for both.SUMATRA ACCIDENTThe deadly incident came on the same day authorities officially called off the search for more than 160 people missing after another ferry sank on a volcanic lake in Sumatra two weeks ago.The vessel was believed to be operating illegally with no manifest and not enough life jackets when it disappeared into the depths of Lake Toba, a picturesque tourist spot. While some bodies have been recovered, many are believed to be trapped inside the sunken vessel at the bottom of one of the world's deepest lakes, which plunges 500 metres in spots.Deadly maritime accidents are not uncommon in Indonesia, where many people depend on boats to get around the 17,000 island nation despite lax safety standards.More than 300 people are estimated to have drowned in 2009 when a ferry sank between Sulawesi and Borneo islands.

Wednesday July 4, 2018Two UN agencies have launched an interactive plant platform involving Somalis in the planning of community projects. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN-Habitat said the Community Action Plan, which was launched in Dollow, will empower different socio-economic groups to actively participate in defining and making informed decisions on development interventions that are especially relevant to them."IOM is in the process of constructing an airport terminal hall and a health centre, as well as the rehabilitation of Dollow orientation centre and several district offices," said the UN migration agency said in a statement issued in Mogadishu on Tuesday.Ads By Google According to IOM, participants include vulnerable people such as internally displaced persons (IDPs), returnees, women and girls, and host communities. The UN housing agency, which is a key partner in the project, is supporting the local government of Dollow with analysis for urban planning consultations, and with durable solutions for protracted displacement."Together with IOM, they also assisted in the construction of a market at Qansaxley IDP camp, the construction of Kabasa IDP primary school and the rehabilitation of a Dollow orientation centre," it said.According to the UN agencies, the action plan outlines the current situation and community vision for peaceful coexistence, social cohesion and sustainable development in Dollow.

Ethiopia: Ex-political prisoners revel in new-found freedom

Wednesday July 4, 2018Kinfe Mickeal Debebe never thought the day would come when he would be a free man again. But on this bright Wednesday morning he is walking down Africa Avenue in downtown Addis Ababa taking in all the sights with a smile while watching people go about their business. The opposition politician, 47, was recently released from prison after serving more than six years of a 25-year jail term."I was arrested in 2011 for organising a peaceful rally. They jailed me for my political activism," Kinfe, popularly known as Aebebe Kestol, told Al Jazeera. As North Africa was at the height of the Arab Spring, Kinfe decided he will try the same in Africa's second most populous country and called for political reform in his country."I organised the rally to call for better human rights, freedom of speech, better democratic space. They saw me as a threat and used anti-terror law to throw me in jail. I never thought I would come out alive," he said.Life in jail was hard. Kinfe, who has lost hearing in one ear, said torture was a common practice in custody."They damaged my right ear during interrogation. Investigation officers beat you until you said whatever they were accusing you of," he said.Reversal of fortuneBut Kinfe's luck changed in an expected way. While he was in prison, streets protests erupted in Oromia region before spreading to Amhara region in the northwest of the East African country. The protesters demanded political reforms and an end to human rights abuses and mass arrests.Addis Ababa responded by introducing a state of emergency and cracking down on the protesters leading to the death of hundreds. In February, as the political crisis dragged on, Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn resigned."Unrest and a political crisis have led to the loss of lives and displacement of many. I see my resignation as vital in the bid to carry out reforms that would lead to sustainable peace and democracy," Hailemariam said in a televised address as he announced he was stepping down.In came Abiy Ahmed, the country's first prime minister from the Oromo ethnic group.Abiy, 41, announced a raft of reform measures and the release of thousands of political prisoners, including Kinfe. He also ordered the lifting of emergency law.In a rare and candid admission, Abiy said last month that his country's security institutions tortured and committed "terrorist acts" against its own citizens in the past."I never thought I would leave prison as a free man. I thought the only way to leave was in a body bag. I have seen people die in prison because of poor or no medical treatment," Kinfe said.Kinfe, who was arrested eight times previously, is clear in pointing out who was behind his release and that of thousands of other political prisoners."It was not the government that released us. It was the demands of the people that got us out of prison. The government had no choice but to release us, thanks to our people," he added.Opposition groupsMany of Ethiopia's opposition group were also placed in the country's list of terrorist organisations forcing many to leave the country or go underground. But that is changing now. Addis Ababa last week moved to remove three prominent opposition groups from the list of the country's terrorist organisations, much to the delight of their supporters. The groups - Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) and Ginbot 7 - have each been engaged in armed struggles against the government in Addis Ababa.Brhanu Tekleyared is a member Ginbot 7 - an outlawed opposition group formed after a disputed election in 2005 and named after the date in the Ethiopian calendar when the vote took place - and has been out of prison for less than a month. He is still coming to terms with his newfound freedom. In 2014, he was arrested while trying to cross the border into Eritrea where other members of the armed opposition group are based.Ads By Google He was sent to six years in prison for been a member of what Addis Ababa called a terrorist organisation."In prison they used to beat us for fun. They waterboarded me. I have seen people who had nails pulled from their fingers. I never thought I will leave prison alive, let alone early," Brhanu told Al Jazeera.Soon after taking office in April, Abiy ordered the closure of Maekelawi prison - a notorious detention and investigation centre where rights groups and former inmates say torture was common. Both Kinfe and Brhanu spent time in that prison.Addis Ababa has also promised to look into the demands of protesters and reform its justice system."There has been a lot of public demand regarding reforming our justice sector in general. We have acknowledged there were limitations to our justice system. We have agreed to look at our justice system and reform it and also broaden our democratic spaces," Ahmed Shide, Ethiopia's communications minister told Al Jazeera."We are taking the issues of human right and reform of the justice system very seriously." he added. The opposition members released from prison acknowledge the new government has started on the right path but say more needs to be done."Abiy is young and has many ideas but his government needs to do more. They have to repeal the anti-terror law and shake up the electoral commission before us in the opposition trust it and run in elections," Kinfe, who ran for office before, said.

Environmentalists: Ethiopia's Dams Threaten Thousands of Kenyans

$

Wednesday July 4, 2018Some 300,000 Kenyans who depend on Turkana, the world's biggest desert lake, could run short of drinking water and fish if Ethiopia moves ahead with plans to construct two more dams on a river upstream, activists said.UNESCO, the U.N. cultural agency, put Kenya's Lake Turkana on its list of endangered World Heritage Sites last week because of the "disruptive effect" of an existing Ethiopian dam and irrigated sugar estates over Kenya's northern border."We are concerned that these projects will have implication on the local communities who depend on the lake for fishing and for their livelihood," said Guy Debonnet, a conservation expert with UNESCO. "Ethiopia is planning two new dams on the Omo River, which will only make the situation worse."Ads By Google Addis Ababa rejects the claims, saying its own studies show the dam will regulate the river's flow and stabilize water levels in the flood-prone region. Also known as the Jade Sea, Lake Turkana, in northwestern Kenya, gets 90 percent of its water from the Omo River in Ethiopia, one of Africa's fastest-growing economies, using its rivers to generate power for manufacturing and export.Ethiopia's Gibe III Dam, which was completed in 2016, and irrigation for the Kuraz sugar plantations have already reduced water into Turkana from the Omo River, said Rudo Sanyanga, Africa director of the lobby group International Rivers. The lake is likely to shrink slowly, reducing breeding grounds for fish, and become too salty for fish to survive and too toxic for people and animals to drink, possibly triggering conflict and overcrowding, she said Monday."Ethiopia should cancel the plans that it has to construct two more dams, Gibe IV and Gibe V, on the Omo River," she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in emailed comments. "These projects will only exacerbate the risk for drying up of the lake."Ethiopia is also at loggerheads with Egypt over another dam that Addis Ababa is building on the River Nile that Cairo fears will reduce waters running to its fields and reservoirs from Ethiopia's highlands.Ikal Angelei, director of Friends of Lake Turkana, which advocates for communities living around the lake — many of whom rely heavily on livestock — said underground water basins and pasture would also be reduced."Gibe IV and Gibe V cannot go on without the Kenyan government being a little bit more realistic of the impact," Angelei told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. "While Kenya is planning to possibly benefit from buying the power, we have to ask ourselves: What is the cost of this power on the ecosystem in the longer term?"

Over 800,000 have fled southern Ethiopia due to violence, report says

Wednesday July 4, 2018More than 800,000 people have been forced from their homes due to a new wave of inter-ethnic violence that has been in place in southern Ethiopia since June, according to a joint report by the United Nations and the Ethiopian government."Renewed violence along the border areas of Gedeo and West Guji zones since early June ... has led to the displacement of over 642,152 IDP's (internally displaced persons) in Gedeo zone ... and 176,098 IDP's in West Guji zone of Oromia region," said the report, which was issued on Wednesday. There was no information about casualties. The inter-ethnic violence initially broke out in April in the region, about 400 kilometers (250 miles) south of the capital Addis Ababa. According to the report, traditional leaders encouraged the return of the displaced people after the initial clashes in April but many have fled again since June."The security situation has been challenging despite the deployment of the Ethiopian Defense Forces in the area, with reports of continued destruction of houses, other assets and service infrastructure," the report read.Ads By Google It further said that the newly displaced people are in need of food and other aid.Ethiopia, a racially diverse country, has witnessed mass protests triggered by ethnic discontent that forced Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn to resign in February. In April, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed took office and has promised political and economic reforms to address the complaints of marginalization by several ethnic groups, including his own group, the Oromos.More than 200 people are estimated to have been killed during last month's violence, diplomats said, stressing that confirmation is impossible due to a lack of security.Rising ethnic tensions in Ethiopia is blamed on the country’s federal system. Ethiopia's ruling coalition took power in 1991 and has created regional states based on ethnicity in a federal republic.

Tens of thousands of Kenyans go hungry after floods - aid agencies

Wednesday July 4, 2018Tens of thousands of survivors of Kenya's worst floods in recent years are living on the brink with barely enough food to eat two months after the disaster, aid workers warned on Wednesday, calling on authorities to provide increased funding and support.Incessant heavy rainfall in March and April caused dams and rivers in parts of the East African nation to overflow, submerging crops and washing away homes. At least 186 people died and more than 300,000 others were forced to flee. While water levels have receded and many people have returned home, aid workers in the worst affected coastal region of Tana River county said most of those displaced were still living in camps with little means of survival."The majority of the 150,000 people displaced in Tana River are still in the camps as they have not received any information from authorities on whether it is safe to return or not," said Matthew Cousins, humanitarian director for Oxfam Kenya."They also have nothing to go back to. Their homes and crops have been destroyed and they have not been given any help to rebuild their lives."After a severe drought last year, East Africa was hit by two months of heavy rains, disrupting the lives of millions of people in Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia and Uganda.Kenya experiences two rainy seasons - from March to May and then from October to November - but seasonal rainfall recorded this year has been the highest in 50 years, according to the country's meteorological department. In Tana River county, the floods not only damaged infrastructure such as roads, bridges and schools, it also submerged swathes of farmland and killed thousands of livestock.Ads By Google A lack of clean drinking water and poor sanitation in the camps has also resulted in a cholera outbreak with around 300 people contracting the potentially fatal disease, although aid workers said there had been no new cases for over 7 days."People need food. They do not have enough to eat. We are registering people in the camps and many children, women and elderly are looking weak and malnourished," said Ahmed Ibrahim, head of the charity Arid Lands Development Focus."Some said the last good meal they ate was a chapatti and a cup of tea, that too was two or three days ago. It's a very bad situation and the county appears not to have enough the funds required to support these people."The Tana River county government said in May it needed around $70 million to help flood survivors rebuild their homes and livelihoods, but aid workers said funds promised by the federal government had not come through.County officials confirmed there had been a delay in funding from the central government, but said that funds would be provided, adding that people should return home soon."I do not know how much of the $70 million we have received, but we haven't received all of it," Salim Bagana, secretary of the Tana River country government, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation."There were some delays but now the money is coming and people should be going home. We will help them to restart their lives and we ask our humanitarian partners to also help."

Somali refugee model graces cover of Teen Vogue in a hijab

Wednesday July 4, 2018Twenty-year-old Halima Aden is making her mark as a Somali-American model who has made it a point of keeping true to her roots in her work as a cover girl and now ambassador for humanitarian organisation UNICEF.Aden's family fled their home during Somalia's civil war, relocating to the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya. She remained there for seven years before heading to the United States and settling in St. Cloud, Minnesota, with her mother and younger brother.Ads By Google From the start, Aden says she was determined to have a better life, taking on two jobs by the age of 16.Landing a modelling contract happened by chance when she decided to enter the Miss Minnesota pageant as a 19-year-old.Her decision to wear a hijab in the pageant received publicity and photos soon went viral. The photo was taken while she advocating against the string of mall stabbings involving a Somali man. A chance photo of her with a baby named Jayse playing with her hijab was posted on a state senator's social media account, and it went viral.Soon the story switched focus from the anti-violence protest to being about Halima's journey as the first contestant wearing a hijab in the Miss Minnesota pageant 2016.She later decided to also wear a burkini for the swimsuit segment of the competition.Soon CR Fashion Book was knocking on the door for cover magazine shoot and a contract with international modelling agency IMG soon followed. She said setting her own terms, including the condition of wearing a hijab in her modelling work, was a key focus for her as she negotiated the modelling contract. In the past 18 months as a model, the first to wear a hijab on the runway, she has been on nine covers. Two years ago, she struggled to find a picture of somebody wearing a hijab inside the magazine, let alone on the cover."When I got that opportunity to sign with IMG models, I made sure I wasn’t conforming,” she told American television program, CBS This Morning.Seven months into her modelling career she was still working as a housekeeper.Aden said remembering where she came from has been a touchstone for all her work including those assignments when she graces the cover of Vogue Arabia, Allure and Glamour.“Growing up, I never saw magazine articles painting Muslim women in a positive light," she said in an interview with Teen Vogue. "In fact, if I saw an article about someone who looked like me, it would be the complete opposite.”She went back to Kakuma camp recently to take part in the first ever TEDx event at a refugee camp. Her journey home for the first time in 13 years is documented in a video by Teen Vogue. She says while her family did not have much in material possessions in the camp, they had each other.“Kakuma doesn’t have much, but we had little beetles and insects," she said. "I remember this one time I was chasing some kind of critter and it led me somewhere I’d never even been before. To the edge of Turkana County. That’s how far I ventured out, but I always made it home."As for her work being an ambassador for UNICEF, Aden said it is like things are coming full circle. She got a chance at a new life because of UNICEF, and now she has the opportunity to return the favour.“They always reminded me as a kid that I was not forgotten. I didn’t know what life outside of a camp looked like,” she said.“I couldn’t even imagine it. UNICEF was [my world]. Before I could sign my own name, when I was literally doing ‘x’ for my name, I could spell UNICEF.”Changing the face of modelling, Aden has quickly built a fan base. The supporters include those who say they have a new role model to look up to.The love continued on Aden's Facebook page where high school friends and neighbours said they could not be prouder."You're an amazing voice and role model," Cathie Helminick posted."I am so proud of you! You make my heart sing! Sue Woods Peterka wrote.Aden said she found the best way to break stereotypes is to just be "your authentic self"."People will come up to me and be like, wow, I did not know we had this much in common. That just shows you how much we don’t really have Muslim women in the spotlight," she told Time Magazine last month."We don’t really showcase all these incredible women who are doing positive things and who are a part of your community. We should all strive for inclusivity and to invite people who are different from us to hear our stories and to listen to theirs."

Ethiopia starts oil production from Ogaden Basin

Business Week Wednesday July 4, 2018Chinese state owned enterprise Poly Group is working with another Chinese company, Golden Concord Group, to develop oil and gas projects in Ethiopia. The conglomerate, named POLY-GCL, began extracting from the Ogaden Basin, located on Somalia’s border, this May. Construction of a 550km pipeline pumping gas to the Port of Djibouti is underway, and substantial exportation is set to begin in 2021.The total cost of this development project is estimated at $4 billion dollars. Other companies exploring for oil and gas in Ethiopia are SouthWest Energy, Africa Oil Corp, GBP Global Resources and Gazprombank Group.POLY-GCL signed five agreements with Ethiopia’s Ministry of Mines in 2013 to explore 117,151 square-kilometres of the Ogaden basin. At least 4.5 trillion cubic feet (ft3) of gas has been discovered.Once fully operational, 3 million ft3 of LNG (liquid natural gas) is planned for exportation in year one and 6 million ft3 in year two. Black Rhino Group has invested $300 million already in the pipeline running from Ethiopia to the shores of Djibouti.Ads By Google Currently, oil is transported via truck between Addis Ababa and the city of Djibouti for both import and export demands but the pipeline is set to change all that. Turner and Townsend have won a contract to manage its construction. The company are based in Leeds and specialise in natural resource sectors.POLY-GCL have begun work in three areas of the Hilala and Calub localities of Ogaden. The Calub field is estimated to hold 2.7 Trillion ft3 of natural gas. Half of the refinery’s output will be directed to the Ethiopian market and the remainder exported to neighbouring countries in East Africa. POLY-GCL have organised the basin area into ten blocks – 2 under development and 8 under exploration.Natural gas and condensate oil are the main products while there is also crude oil in some reservoirs. Other than Ogaden, Ethiopia has 4 sedimentary basins elsewhere – Gambela (in the west), Mekele (in the north), Southern Rift (in the south) and Abay (in the central west).Zhu Gong Shan, also known as China’s greenest billionaire is CEO of POLY-GCL. The company has 192 employees and place strong emphasis on providing people with efficient and clean energy services. By exporting gas from Africa they hope to solve air pollution in China, a country of 1,379 billion people. Initial production has begun in Ethiopia but only on a small scale. 450 barrels a day are supplying the gas condensate for local manufacturers and cement factories. Eight gas production wells have been drilled and made ready for production.Ethiopia has now joined Kenya and Uganda as the only three serious oil-producing nations in East Africa. Sudan, in the north-east, is the seventh largest operator on the continent producing around 487,000 barrels a day, but due to political tensions hasn’t been able to fully tap into the industry. Nigeria is top of the list in Africa and very popular with European and US refiners. Other countries in East Africa with fresh oil and gas finds are Uganda and Tanzania – although exporting has not begun here.In its ambition to become a middle income nation by 2025, Ethiopia is aggressively developing power supply capabilities in all areas.Russian company Rosatom Africa recently began the construction of a nuclear research centre and two huge hydropower dams are nearing completion. Renewable energy is a priority to the government for obvious reasons but oil and gas has realistic potential to supply the hard currency this country needs.LNG from Ethiopia will be shipped to China via a dedicated terminal in Djibouti. Carriers with cargo tank capacity of 177,000 m3 (cubic metres) are mostly being adopted. Once gas reaches the port it will be processed and liquefied there before shipping.Initial development of the LNG plant in Djibouti occupies an area of approximately 50 hectares. Its main processing and auxiliary facilities include a feed gas pre-treatment unit, liquefaction unit, LNG storage, transmission system, production and administration buildings.POLY-GCL is working closely with Ethiopia’s Ministry of Mines. This is a good thing as oil and gas can have positive or negative effects on a country that has it, depending on how revenues are handled. President Abiy Ahmed insists profits will go back into improving services for the people of Ethiopia. The role of the Ministry is mainly to generate the basic geosciences data of the country, to promote mineral and petroleum potential, to negotiate and issue licenses to private investors and ensure they conduct mineral and petroleum operations in accordance with their concession agreements. Hopefully this new development will not only bring profit to POLY-GCL and reduce emissions in China, but also go a long way to developing Ethiopia into the middle-income country it wishes to be.

Wednesday July 4, 2018A town in southern Somalia has banned men and women dancing together at weddings, a local radio station is reporting.Barawe’s district commissioner cited Islamic law as the reason for the dancing ban.It used to be common for the sexes to intermingle on dance floors in Somalia, until the Islamist militant group al-Shabab began to take over territory in 2007 - imposing a strict version of Sharia in these areas.Barawe was under the occupation of the militants for five years until 2012.Ads By Google Commissioner Adan Omar Madobe also said his administration had banned women from wearing the full-face veil, or niqab - it leaves the area around the eyes clearHe told Radio Kulmiye this decision had been taken for security reasons: "We have seen incidents where men wear a veil to disguise themselves as women with the aim of doing harm to the public."It is not the first Somali town to do so - Jowhar banned them in 2015 for the same reasons.Niqabs have been widely adopted in Somalia in the last decade. The commissioner encouraged women to instead wear the hijab - which does not cover the face - and long, heavy clothing.Earlier this year, several people died in an explosion at a stadium in Barawe, blamed on al-Shabab.The militants disapprove of the playing and watching of football, which is outlawed in their areas.

MOGADISHU, July 4 (Xinhua) -- The Somali National Army (SNA) killed at least 20 al-Shabab militants in a fierce fighting in Somali's southern village of Muse Haji on Tuesday evening, army officials said Wednesday.
The fighting broke out when al-Shabab militants attempted to launch an ambush on military base in Muse Haji village in Lower Juba region in southern Somalia.
"They (al-Shabab) have tried to attack our base but we have managed to bush them back and killed 20 of them," SNA Commander for the 43rd Sector, Ismail Sheikh Isaq, said.

Residents in nearby villages told Xinhua that they heard blasts followed by huge gunfire at the military base .
"The fighting lasted for hours and both sides have exchanged huge gunfire but now the government forces are in full control of the area," a resident, Ahmed Nur, told Xinhua.
The militant group is yet to comment on the latest assault by SNA which comes amid increased military operations in southern Somalia particularly Lower Shabelle region which remains one of the strongholds of the group.

Somali Villagers Resist al-Shabab Militants Recruiting Children

Somalia
At least 15 people were killed in central Somalia when villagers clashed with Al-Shabab militants trying to recruit their children as fighters.
According to local sources, 10 militants and five villagers died in the fighting in Aad village, in the central Galmudug administration.
A villager who requested anonymity told VOA's Somali Service that the militants met with local elders two days ago and sought help with the recruitment. "The fighting came after they demanded that we provide young children to fight alongside them," he said.
Ads By Google He said the villagers organized themselves and decided to resist, but Al-Shabab moved into the village, and took control.
"They are using power, they want to take kids, they want livestock, the fighting is not over," he said.
Galmudug regional deputy security minister Mahad Hassan Mohamed told VOA Somali the villagers are defending themselves.
"They [Al-Shabab] want to take away their children and take them to their madrassas. The people have rejected this," Mohamed said.
The Shabab militants say they defended the village after an attack by regional forces and killed 15 regional troops.
VOA reported last September that Al-Shabab militants have been meeting with clan elders and Koran school teachers, ordering them to provide young recruits for Al-Shabab training camps and madrassas. The move has forced hundreds of children to flee Shabab-controlled areas in Bay and Bakool regions of southwest Somalia.
Earlier this year, New York-based Human Rights Watch published a report detailing Al-Shabab's forced recruitment and efforts to take children away from their parents and religious schools. It said children as young as eight were affected.
Sanguni attack
Three Somali soldiers and two militants died in a separate attack Tuesday near the town of Sanguni in Lower Jubba region, a military officer tells VOA Somali. A U.S. soldier was killed in an Al-Shabab mortar attack there on June 9.
Mukhtar Abdi Mohamed, a unit commander with Somali forces, said Shabab militants "sneaked along the river" and surprised the Somali troops who were having lunch in a forward outpost. He said three government soldiers and two militants died in the fighting that ensued.
Local sources put the death toll on Somali soldiers at seven.
