This Toronto artist uses sci-fi and space to tell her story of growing up Somali

BY ALLISON BAKER Monday July 16, 2018
Growing up, Riya Jama loved the Harry Potter books. But as she worked her way through the series, she started wondering why there were no Somali witches or wizards in a world where it seemed like anything was possible. Jama turned to her father, who asked her a question that changed the course of her creative life: “Why would a woman who doesn’t look like you represent you?”
Now thirty-three, the Toronto-based writer, photographer and mixed-media artist has been representing people like herself in her work for over a decade. She identifies as a diasporic visual storyteller, aiming her lens at East Africa. Jama never really knew how to describe her art until she was invited to an Afrofuturism conference in New York. Credited as the artistic philosophy that shaped Marvel’s Black Panther, Afrofuturism reclaims black identity through different aspects of creativity.
Jama’s first solo show, Riyadii Farxiyo (which translates to “dreams of Farhiya” in Somali) is a culmination of mixed-media pieces based on her recurring dreams. It incorporates found photos of Somali girls—some morphed into cyborgs—superimposed on images of space. Each piece is named after a Somali woman in Jama’s life, with one exception. To pay homage to her father’s influence, Jama named one of her pieces Bilan—her father’s favourite female name. “I wanted this exhibit to be a love letter to little black girls who don’t ever feel seen,” she says.
Riyadii Farxiyo runs until Sept. 1 at Gallery 44. Here, Jama discusses some of her favourite pieces:

JamilaNamed after Jama’s mother and biggest cheerleader, this image is based on a recurring dream Jama had of a young girl being watched over by her guardian. She says she identifies most with this piece and it was the first in the series to be finished.“It’s hard for my mental demons to win when my cheerleaders are stronger,” she says.

IftinThis one is named after Jama’s paternal grandmother. Jama says she initially wanted to make the girl’s hijab (this style is known as jilbab) blue, like the Somali flag, but she went with pink because it’s her grandmother’s favourite colour. The hijab is a frequent feature in Jama’s work—in Riyadii Farxiyo, she tried to focus entirely on visible Muslimahs (Muslim women). “If I, a non-hijabi Muslimah, didn’t feel seen, I can’t image how a hijabi feels.”

CaashoWhile Jama says her art is for everyone, she wants her work to be particularly accessible to young black girls (and children in general). “They need to see it more than adults,” she says. “I didn’t have this, and I didn’t know that it could exist.”

Hidden Gabar YarIn Western media, Jama is used to seeing the hijab presented in an oppressive way. “I wanted this exhibit to represent an affirmation for when I was younger, when I was starving for representation because everywhere I looked—even in sci-fi—no one looked like me.”

Hoyoo UniverseIn Hoyoo Universe, Jama wanted to recreate the birth of the galaxy. “There’s something poetic about making a Black woman the mother of the universe,” she says.

Fanged GabarThis piece represents Jama’s attempt to understand herself as an individual. In Somalia, the majority of the population is Muslim. As a non-hijabi, Jama says her Muslim identity is often overlooked within the black community, while her black identity is overlooked by other Muslims. She says she’s in a “limbo of intersection.”

Guardian of XiddigahaTo reflect the vividness of her dreams, she wanted each image to look natural while also being otherworldly. “I’m obsessed with making art surreal, but also real,” Jama says.

Obama praises Kenya's political reconciliation

Tuesday July 17, 2018Tom Odula
NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Former U.S. President Barack Obama Monday praised Kenya's president and opposition leader for working together but said this East African country must do more to end corruption.
Obama, on his first visit to Africa since stepping down as president, commended President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga for cooperating following last year's disputed presidential election which were marked by violence.
Ads By Google "Despite some of the tumultuous times that seem to attend every election we now have a president and major opposition leader who have pledged to build bridges and have made specific commitments to work together," said Obama, speaking in Kogelo in Siaya County, the rural birthplace of his late father.
"So what we see here in Kenya is all part of an emergence of a more confident, more self-reliant Africa. But we know real progress means addressing the problems that remain. It means rooting out corruption that weakens civic life," he said.
Other challenges facing Kenya are tribalism and the need for better education, Obama said. Since visiting Kenya as senator in 2006 and then as president in 2015, Obama has passionately urged Kenya to tackle its endemic corruption and problems surrounding the divisions between this country's ethnic groups. In 2006, he angered the government of President Mwai Kibaki when he gave a talk about corruption at the University of Nairobi. The government spokesman responded calling him "an inexperienced young man who could not teach Kenya how to manage its affairs."
Obama went to Kogelo on Monday to launch a sports and training center founded by his half-sister, Auma Obama, through her foundation Sauti Kuu.
Thousands of Kenyans turned up in his ancestral home of Kogelo to see Obama but many could not get into the venue due to high security.
"We are here to welcome our brother Barack Obama, but we have several challenges because we are not able to see our son," said Boniface Rachula, a farmer from Kogelo who was turned away from the event.
"We wanted to appreciate Barack Obama for what he has done. In fact he has developed the community through giving iron sheets for people to build their houses," he said.
Obama's current visit to Kenya is low key, unlike his previous trips where he electrified thousands of Kenyans who lined the streets to see him.
Many Kenyans consider Obama native to this country — a local kid made good — and bask in the glory of his success, despite the fact that he never lived in Africa. He was born in Hawaii, where he spent most of his childhood raised by his mother, a white American from Kansas. He barely knew his father for whom he was named, Barack Obama, an economist.
"It is a joy to be with so many people who are family to me and so many people who claim to be family to me. Everybody is a cousin," Obama said in jest.
Later Monday he left for South Africa where he will deliver the annual Neslon Mandela lecture which this year will mark the late anti-apartheid icon's 100th birthday.

Somali teens say they feared for their lives at Minnehaha Park

Kare11 Tuesday July 17, 2018Suhaib Ahmed described nightmares.Adam Guffe admitted he's afraid to leave the house.Abdijabar Ahmed said he was so scared he thought it would be his "last day of this world."The three middle school students, all sons of Somali immigrants, explained for the first time on Monday how an encounter with Minneapolis Park Police last week left them shaken and afraid for their lives. In a news conference organized by the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the teens stood side-by-side with their mothers and recounted how a Park Police officer pointed a weapon at them and placed them in handcuffs for several minutes before releasing them without charges.A video of the incident has now been viewed nearly three million times on Facebook, garnering national media attention and prompting the Park Police to seek an independent investigation into their officers' conduct."I felt like I was discriminated. I felt like it was not supposed to happen," Guffe said, "and I hope it never happens to anyone again."A fourth Somali teen was also placed in handcuffs, but he did not attend the news conference due to a family emergency.Ads By Google Park Police said officers acted in response to a 911 call, which described four teenagers with knives and sticks. The caller said one of the teens said he had a gun in his backpack, and the caller also said the teens were carrying out an assault.Park Police said one officer "unholstered" his gun and pointed it in the general direction of the teens upon arriving, prior to handcuffing the children and detaining them in the squad car.No weapons were ever found on any of the teenagers, police said. The agency is investigating whether the 911 caller knowingly provided false information, which would be a crime.Last week, the witness who posted a video of the incident on Facebook claimed that the four teenagers were being taunted by a white teenager before police arrived. The teenagers, who are between the ages of 13 and 16, corroborated that eyewitness account. They said the white teenager called them racial slurs and threatened them with a knife and a garbage lid."I just thought when police came, I basically thought they were going to go to that suspect because he had the knife," Guffe said, adding that police instead ordered them to the ground. "We were cooperative but they still... They mistreated us, still. And they wouldn't listen to us."A spokesperson for the Minneapolis Park Board said it appears Park Police still have not located the person who called 911 (and/or the person who allegedly threatened the teens on the scene)."The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) continues to work on the July 10, 2018 case involving the 911 call that led to the handcuffing and detainment of four youth at Minnehaha Regional Park," the spokesperson said in a statement to KARE 11. "The investigation into the origins and validity of the initial 911 call is ongoing."According to a police report, attempts to reach this caller in person and by phone initially failed. "Other suspect involved not identified," the report said. The Park Board spokesperson said the agency held a meeting with families last week to listen to their concerns and apologize for what happened. Outside legal counsel has now been hired to independently investigate the officers' conduct at the park, the spokesperson confirmed.Adam's mother, Sirat Guffe, said through a translator that the officers' behavior toward her son was unacceptable."The way our children were dealt with was really subhuman," she said. "It was horrible, they treated our children as felons and as thugs and our children are just like any other children, were outside during the school break enjoying the park system."Jaylani Hussein, the executive director of CAIR, said the families are considering a lawsuit. However, no legal action has been taken at this point. The teenagers, according to Hussein, have said the Park Police officer who pointed his weapon at them was "trembling," which they interpreted as an extremely dangerous situation that "could have become, unfortunately, extremely tragic."The children were released without any physical injuries, according to Park Police, but Hussein said some of the teens still had markings on their wrists from the tight handcuffs. He places the blame on both the 911 call and the on-scene conduct of Park Police."It started out as a hate crime," Hussein said, "and police doubled down with a very horrible, scary situation."

Emergency meeting on asylum seekers

House of Commons Immigration Committee to meet today after increasingly tense month on the issue of asylum claimants
Last week a tense meeting between Canada’s federal immigration minister and an Ontario government minister ended in name-calling, an abrupt exit, and demands for an apology.
It was all over the issue of the massive influx of asylum seekers crossing illegally into Canada from the U.S. and who has to pay for them.
Ads By Google Earlier this month  a meeting between Prime Minister Trudeau and the newly elected Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, began and ended with strong differences of opinion. Prior to that meeting a statement from Ontario was issued saying the massive influx of illegal border crossers was all Ottawa’s fault and the meeting ended with a diplomatically-worded but not too subtle rebuke from Trudeau.
Then on Friday at a meeting of federal and provincial ministers, Ontario’s Community and Social Services Minister Lisa McLeod got into a heated discussion about the issue during which McLeod walked out and later said the Somali-born federal minister called her “un-Canadian”.
Federal Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Ahmed Hussen also later said the Ontario government was “fear-mongering” and being “divisive”.  McLeod refused to sign the final communique along with a Saskatchewan minister who also said Ottawa has to pay for asylum seekers.
Last week at a federal-provincial meeting on immigration, federal minister Ahmed Hussen said Ontario “had chosen the language of fear and division” (CBC)
In addition to the over 30,000 asylum claimants last year, there have been an estimated 10,000 that have crossed illegally into Canada so far this year.
After the meeting, Ontario’s social services minister, Lisa McLeod says the federal minister labelled her as “un-Canadian” and wants an apology from him.(CBC)
Earlier this year the government of Quebec, the province where the vast majority of illegal entries into Canada occur, said its social services were being overwhelmed and needed over $120 million dollars to cope with what they said was a “federal” responsibility.  Many asylum claimants soon leave the mainly French-speaking Quebec, for Ontario.
With the arrival of the new Ontario government, it too says the asylum problem was a federal responsibility. Ontario and the city of Toronto especially, say they are facing a housing crisis for the migrants and Ottawa must pay.
Ontario says it needs anwhere from $70 to $90 million to cover the various costs. Ottawa says it will provide $11 million to Ontario.
There will be an emergency meeting of the federal House of Commons immigration committee today.
“The refugee determination system is at a crossroads. Once again it is dealing with a surge in claims that it is ill-equipped to manage, running the risk of creating a large backlog that, if not tackled promptly, may take years to bring to final resolution”  (147-page independent immigration review, released June 2018)
The federal opposition parties are now also calling on the government to “undertake a study to review the adequacy of the federal government’s response to the impact of increased asylum seekers crossing into Canada from the United States”.
They want at least two more meetings of the Immigration Committee this summer to hear about the Trudeau government’s plans to deal with the situation.
They are saying federal Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen should be called to testify along with any provincial ministers and want a federal study completed by August 3.
Many of the asylum claimants in Ontario are currently being housed in university dormitories and Ontario says it will be in a crisis situation when students begin to return to classes in just a few weeks.
The Liberal chairman of the House of Commons committee says he would welcome additional meetings but added that while  he considers it an important issue, he does not see it as a crisis.

Ethiopian PM to deploy Federal military and police forces to conflict regions in Ethiopia

Borkena Tuesday July 17, 2018The Ethiopian prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, announced today that members of the defense force and the federal police will be deployed to stabilize conflict-ridden parts of Ethiopia where violence claimed lives.A report by Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) says Ethio-Somali and Oromo region presidents have held a discussion following the decision by the PM and agreed on the immediate deployment of Federal police and the defense force along areas adjacent to the two regional estates.Abiy Ahmed also called on what he called forces that aggravate conflicts, apparently ethnic-based one, to refrain from doing so and rather work towards promoting unity and love among people.Ads By Google He sent “last warning” to forces “who do not understand the value of peace” and engaged in orchestrating violence in Oromo, Somali and Southern Ethiopia regions when he made a speech in Awassa a few days ago where he was hosting Eritrean president Isayas Afeworki. While there is a tendency towards supporting the initiative of the new prime minister to promote unity in the country, analysts tend to criticize the administration pointing out that Abiy Ahmed administration needs to focus on building institutions and resort to governing through institutions to stop lawlessness and loss of civilians lives due to manufactured ethnic-based violence.Hundreds of citizens are reportedly killed in Ethio-Somali region, Oromo region, and Southern Ethiopia region in the past few weeks and hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced in Gedeo region of Southern Ethiopia. In September 2017, over half-million Ethiopians were displaced from Ethio-Somali region following a full-fledged violence which was reportedly supported by Somali region special forces.

Convictions Upheld for Women Who Raised Money for Al-Shabab

Tuesday July 17, 2018
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A federal appeals court has upheld the convictions and prison sentences of two women who used an internet chat room to raise several thousand dollars for the Somali militant group al-Shabab.
Ads By Google Muna Osman Jama of Reston, Virginia, and Hinda Osman Dhirane of Kent, Washington, were convicted of providing support to a terrorist organization. Jama was sentenced to 12 years, while Dhirane received 11 years.
In their appeal, Jama and Dhirane argued that a federal judge was wrong to deny their motion to suppress evidence and to apply certain sentencing enhancements.
The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected those arguments in a ruling Monday.
The women did not deny their sympathies for al-Shabab, but their lawyers argued that the money went to people who were not clearly defined mem

Judge sets aside decision to refer Abdoul Abdi case to deportation hearing

Windsor Star Tuesday July 17, 2018 A Federal Court judge has set aside a decision to refer the case of Abdoul Abdi to a deportation hearing, saying Ottawa “blatantly” ignored the Somali child refugee’s charter rights and did not consider international law.In a written decision dated July 13, Justice Ann Marie McDonald said a delegate of the public safety minister failed to consider the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and international law in arriving at her decision, despite being statutorily mandated to render a decision consistent with the charter.“Most blatantly, the (delegate’s) decision discloses no indication that the (delegate) even considered the charter values,” said McDonald, who does not name the delegate in her decision.“In fact, the charter is not mentioned anywhere in the (delegate’s) cover letter outlining the issues she considered or in the body of her decision. This is so despite Mr. Abdi’s extensive submissions on the charter.”Ads By Google Still, the threat of deportation remains for Abdi, who was never granted Canadian citizenship while growing up in foster care in Nova Scotia. The Canada Border Services Agency had detained the 24-year-old man after he served about five years in prison for multiple offences, including aggravated assault.Abdi, who has never lived in Somalia and has no ties to the country, had sought a judicial review of the federal government’s decision to refer his case to a deportation hearing. His lawyer Benjamin Perryman argued in Federal Court in Halifax that the decision was unreasonable, unfair and contrary to the charter and international law.McDonald noted the delegate is also required to weigh the statutory objectives of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act with the values of the charter, and that her decision was unreasonable and not “justified, transparent and intelligible.”It goes on to highlight the unique facts of Abdi’s case, including that his aunt had unsuccessfully attempted to apply for citizenship for him in 2005, but was stopped by the provincial Department of Community Services on the basis that as a ward of the state, only it could apply for citizenship.“These factors may be relevant considerations with respect to a (section 15) charter value of non-discrimination in the (delegate’s) referral decision. But they were not considered,” the decision said.McDonald set aside the decision to refer the matter to a deportation, and sent the case back for “redetermination” by a different delegate of the public safety minister.Public Safety Canada did not immediately return a request for comment Monday.Perryman said his client is happy with the decision, but has found the process over the past two years “emotionally distressing and extremely stressful.”“He says he’s trying to work a lot and stay productive, reintegrate into Canadian society, and help his family, but he said to me, ‘I’m tired of living life on this roller coaster and I’m ready to live life in peace’,” said Perryman. The lawyer noted this is the second time the Federal Court has overturned a decision to refer the case to a deportation hearing. In October 2017, the court concluded that the decision-maker relied on protected youth records, but his case was again referred to a deportation hearing in a January 2018 redetermination decision.Perryman said there remains uncertainty about what will happen next, and it’s possible the matter could be referred to a deportation hearing a third time. He said he hopes Ottawa will instead issue a warning letter, which would pause deportation proceedings so long as Abdi maintains good behaviour.“Mr. Abdi should not have to go to court a third time for this government to do the right thing,” said Perryman. “It’s time for the ministerial leadership to end the proceedings against him and to ensure that children in state care become citizens.”Perryman has said a deportation hearing would inevitably lead to a deportation order given the circumstances of Abdi’s case.Abdi, who was born in Saudi Arabia in 1993, lost his Somalian mother in a refugee camp when he was four and came to Canada with his sister and aunts two years later. He was taken into provincial care shortly after arriving in Canada.Abdi was moved between foster homes 31 times. He lost his native language and developed behavioural problems that advocates say were not adequately treated. They say those issues led to problems with the justice system and his non-citizenship put him at risk of deportation. His case has prompted supporters to call on the Nova Scotia government to intervene on his behalf, and sparked protests at events with federal leaders, including a town hall earlier this year with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Lower Sackville, N.S

Progress has been made, but 'not at a sufficient speed to realize the SDGs': UN ECOSOC President

One week after zeroing-in on how to build sustainable, resilient societies, key players from around the world debated on Monday at United Nations Headquarters in New York, how to keep up the momentum to turn the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development into a reality.
Speaking at the opening of the major ministerial meeting of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) as well as the high-level segment of the Economic and Social Council, ECOSOC President, Marie Chatardová, cited progress that, at first glimpse, looked positive.
She pointed to extreme poverty, saying that even at one-third of the 1990 value, it was still imprisoning 10.9 per cent of world’s population. Moreover, while 71 per cent have access to electricity - a 10 per cent jump - a billion people still remain in the dark.
Ads By Google “There is progress, but generally not at a sufficient speed to realize the SDGs by 2030,” Ms. Chatardová said.
Despite that backdrop, Ms. Chatardová argued that the 2030 Agenda was being translated into concrete policies and measures: “It seems new ways of making policies are taking root, with many examples of more inclusive and evidence-based approaches,” she said.
Underscoring the importance of science and technology in advancing the goals, she outlined how they are being used to close gaps, such as on investing in renewable energy production and lowering prices; and countering major challenges in cities, from boosting housing affordability to accessing public spaces.
Ms. Chatardová stressed that the same level of engagement must be maintained in the years ahead, urging the world’s leaders to reaffirm their political commitment to the Agenda in 2019, when the high-level forum will also meet in September during the General Assembly.

“We do not have any time to waste,” General Assembly President Miroslav Lajčák told the meeting, focussing on four main points where progress had been made: “We have taken a sledgehammer to extreme poverty,” he began. “Innovations in healthcare are allowing people to live longer and healthier lives. Fewer children are forced to work – and more are where they belong: in school.”
In his second point, he spoke of “huge challenges ahead,” citing that gains made to reduce extreme poverty, have not benefitted everyone, with many are still dying from curable diseases. One-in-six people still lack safe drinking water; women and girls globally remain excluded or oppressed; and “the planet is, quite literally, melting,” he said.
“Moreover, we know that our demands for water, food, energy and housing are already unsustainable,” he added.
Thirdly, he painted a grim picture of how “the world would be a very scary place” without the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Without the 17 Goals “unilateralism, protectionism and extremism would have even larger draws.”
Finally, he said better financing was as urgent priority as we “do not have enough money to meet our goals…But it is out there,” he stated. “We just need to go beyond our traditional models to get it.”
Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed also highlighted progress in some areas, including maternal and child mortality; tackling childhood marriage; addressing global unemployment; and cutting the rate of forest-loss around the globe.
She also stressed that we are either moving too slowly, or losing momentum, citing that for the first time in a decade, the overall number of people who are undernourished has increased – from 777 million people in 2015, to 815 million in 2016 – fundamentally undermining our commitment to leaving no one behind.
Taking the podium, UN Youth Envoy Jayathma Wickramanayake, drew attention to the world’s 1.8 billion youth between the ages of 10 and 24, who have a key role to play in the 2030 Agenda.
“Young people will be the ones leading this agenda in the years to come. In fact, in many places they already are,” upheld the youth envoy, arguing that having been brought up in a world of technological innovation, today’s digitally-savvy youth are the world’s most interconnected generation ever.
“To solve the most pressing issues of our time, we must tap into the dynamism of young innovators, activists, entrepreneurs and advocates, who have the potential to disrupt the status quo and be a strong force for positive change,” Ms. Wickramanayake declared.

New dawn as Eritrea and Ethiopia chart path to peace, prosperity

Tuesday July 17, 2018The rapprochement between Ethiopia and Eritrea after 20 years of grandstanding is expected to have a positive security, political and economic impact in the entire Horn of Africa.Regional security and trade will top the agenda following the joint declaration of peace and friendship signed in Asmara on July 9 between the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed Ali and Eritrean President Isaias Afeworki, normalising relations. The two will restore diplomatic ties, resume flights by the carriers of both countries and jointly modernise the ports of Assab and Massawa.“The state of war has come to an end and the two nations will forge close political, economic, social, cultural and security co-operation. Trade, economic and diplomatic ties will resume, the boundary decision will be implemented and both nations will work on regional peace,” said the PM’s chief of staff, Fitsum Arega, in a statement soon after the signing. Two areas that are likely to improve immediately are border security between the countries, given that they have been accusing each other of sponsoring rebels, and the prospects of Eritrea rejoining the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development and severing its links with Al Shabaab militants.Ads By Google Dr Abiy, prior to his trip to Eritrea, had mobilised parliament to remove three organisations from the classification of being terrorist. These are the Oromo Liberation Front, the Ogaden National Liberation Front and Ginbot 7, that were previously accused of receiving Eritrean military support.BadmeRashid Abdi, the International Crisis Group’s Horn of Africa project director, told The EastAfrican that the visit was a significant development for paving the way for the two leaders’ face to face meet after nearly two decades.Dr Abiy, however, will have to navigate significant internal opposition in order to build consensus on how to resolve the border conflict.“Eritrea is worried about how much Abiy can deliver. They want a quick return of the border territory as a precondition for resolving other issues. That would be difficult, though not impossible,” said Mr Abdi.Dr Abiy, after taking power in April, had promised to recognise the disputed border town of Badme — that caused the 1998-2000 war — as Eritrean territory. The UN-backed Eritrean Ethiopian Boundary Commission had in 2012 found that Badme belonged to Eritrea but Addis Ababa refused to hand it over.In April 2007, Eritrea withdrew from Igad saying that the regional body was controlled by Ethiopia with the help of the US.Igad Executive Secretary, Mahboub Maalim, said that the normalisation of relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea and the resolution of the border issue will undoubtedly benefit the people of the two countries and the entire region.“It will contribute to the realisation of our shared aspiration of peace and economic integration of our region and indeed the continent of Africa," said Mr Maalim. The normalisation of relations came two weeks after Eritrean Foreign Minister Osman Saleh landed in Addis Ababa on June 27 at the head of a big delegation that was welcomed by Dr Abiy at Bole International Airport.Direct international telephone connections were also restored between the countries for the first time after two decades, while Ethiopian Airlines will be free overfly Eritrean airspace and Eritrean Airways would overfly Ethiopia.Alias Meseret, a journalist based in Addis Ababa said that once the “no-war-no-peace” approach maintained by the two countries for many years is dropped, it will open the way for cross border trade and open the way for the lifting of the UN sanctions against Eritrea.“There is no cross-border trade is going on except some smuggling because the border is a militarised zone. Ethiopia used to depend on the Eritrean ports of Assab and Massawa, while Eritrea was a major importer of Ethiopian products. These could all come back with improved diplomatic relations,” said Mr Meseret. Before the war, Eritrea entrepreneurs dominant in Ethiopia exploited the coffee sector in Ethiopia, which analysts say is one of the factors that led to the war. As a consequence, some Eritrean businesses were immediately nationalised.Kennedy Abwao, a Kenyan journalist who has covered the African Union for years, says that the peace will open the door for social elements and family ties as business drivers since there are millions of people have been unable to access their kin across the border. He, however, believes that Ethiopia is reaching out to Eritrea to neutralise the influence of Egypt, which has been sending feelers to Asmara over the Ethiopian Millennium Dam and the issues surrounding the sharing of the Nile’s waters.

Abdow, Mandera’s only newspaper vendor for 20 years

Wednesday July 18, 2018As he walks on the sandy roads of Mandera town, a trail of dust struggles to catch up with Ibrahim Khalif Abdow. He carefully balances a bundle of the day’s newspapers in his hands. He is known by his nickname ‘Dikaya’, which in his mother tongue means a ‘famous person’, thanks to his work. Abdow has been the only newspaper vendor in Mandera County for almost 20 years, delivering the papers to his clients in offices and sending copies to those in remote villages. He started with only two copies of the then East African Standard in 1997, but has since progressed to selling almost 100 copies of The Standard. Ads By Google He learn the trade from a friend in Maua, Meru, where he had gone to take care of a miraa business. So great is the thirst for information in Mandera that a copy goes for Sh100, mostly to his clients, most of whom are regulars. No one complains. “Back in 1997 only one school and another organisation bought a newspaper. My friend living in Maua would send the copies in a vehicle transporting miraa to Mandera. Some days, the vehicle would be delayed and the newspapers would arrive two days later,” he said. Old news is newsEven then Abdow would still get a buyer for his newspapers. Over time, Abdow has diversified and now sells all the mainstream newspapers, including The Nairobian. Even though he has never set foot in a classroom, Abdow knows the day’s headlines well and explains the newspapers' contents to his buyers, in the process recruiting new customers. “I never went to school because my parents were poor and could not pay the fees. Maybe I would have become a journalist if I had,” explained Abdow in Kiswahili. The 36-year-old vendor's day starts at 5am when he gets up to pray before tuning in to regional vernacular radio stations to listen to newspaper reviews. His best business days are when the day’s papers carry news on Mandera County. “When the radio station highlight issues concerning Mandera County, including news stories, tenders and job vacancies, I note this and later use the information to sell the papers,” he explained. “When there is any news concerning Mandera, however small, I sell all my copies by early afternoon. The following day, I even order the previous day’s paper due to demand.” At 8.30am, when the plane lands in Mandera, Abdow sets off to pick up the papers and starts distributing them. A mobile vendor “A newspaper vendor in Mandera cannot sit in one place and wait for buyers. You have to go to them and explain why they should buy the paper. That is why you have to know the content,” said Abdow. During weekends, he joins boys playing football, dividing the competing teams according to the two main newspapers, The Standard team and the Nation one. “The boys have learnt to own their teams and now have an attachment to the specific newspaper. Team Standard, for instance, comes to me in the evening after school to peruse the day’s newspaper,” he said. Before the plane started making daily trips to Mandera, Abdow would arrange to have the papers transported in vehicles carrying miraa. Sometimes the papers were delayed for days, even weeks, during rainy seasons. “During the El Nino in 2007, I suffered for a whole month after the vehicle from Maua transporting the newspapers got stuck in the mud. When they finally arrived, I sold them to shopkeepers at Sh60 per kilo,” he narrated. To ensure that the business runs even when he is unavailable, Abdow has taught his friend the trade. “One time, I fell ill and had to have an operation to remove my appendix. For more than six months, I did not work but my friend Isaac helped me out. He picked up the papers and distributed them. The sales were, however, low since he did not know most of my clients,” he recalled. The business is not without challenges, especially because of the digital age, which has arrived even in marginalised counties. “Some people ask why I am stuck with this business in the changing dynamics with a huge part of the population moving to digital platforms, but I tell them that nothing keeps better records than papers. Understanding clients “Some of the people who tell me newspapers don’t sell in Mandera are wasting their lives abusing drugs and being idle. I tell them that I have a wife and seven children, who all depend on me,” he explained. Thanks to his good relations with the airlines serving the area, Abdow gets his papers delivered on time. “Sometimes, not so often though, the newspapers are not delivered because the plane is heavily loaded. But I have friends at Wilson Airport who facilitate their transportation and the following day they arrive. “In such cases, I go around the town informing my clients about the inconvenience. Most of them understand,” he said. In 2014, there was only one flight to the area, so Abdow paid a partner to send the newspapers in vehicles transporting miraa. Later the number of flights from Nairobi were increased to two. Currently there are flights to Mandera every day.
