Waberi district wins the ‘support the peace’ soccer tourney in Somalia

24 Oct 2011.The ten-day long Futsal tournament which was intended to encourage peace and youth integration in Somalia has successfully concluded at the Raghe Ugas school field in Mogadishu on Saturday with boys from Waberi district winning the trophy after defeating their Wadajir distcirt rivals by 2-1 in the hotly-contested final match.
The final match attracted the attention of many including officials from Somali Football federation, Somali Athletics federation and delegates Somali Diaspora community in UK.
Along side the tournament there were also other athletics competitions held for young women including 100meters running and relay race. The young women who were also members of the SYL 2 students were representing their districts in the capital during the competition.
Somali Athletics Federation vice president for international relations Abduillahi Mohamed Saneey and Abdirahman Mire who was talking on behalf of the Somali sports community in UK praised the youth group for its efforts in peace building through sport.
“I actually see some major developments here, it is unimaginable and here in front of you I confirm that the SYL 2 group has achieved more than can be done by such youth group—I say you continue from here” Somali Athletics federation vice president for international relations Abduillahi Mohamed Saneey told the media at the end of the monthly competition.
For his part Abdirahman Mire, one of the driving forces of the Leicester stars sports club said that the old SYL was the group of young people who scored Somalia’s independence in 1960 and that the SYL 2nd was flowing behind the foot steps of our fathers of independence.
“Somalia is currently experiencing a difficulty era, it its you [SYL2} who are wanted to take a great role in putting the country out of the long-running problems—I am sure that the positive job you are doing will help more in peace building and guiding the Somali youths to the right direction” Mire told the media during a colorful ceremony in which young girls were presented medals for their victory in the relay and 100 meters running competitions.
The Waberi district boys will receive their trophy by the end of the month during the group’s monthly workshop.
Farah Hajji Ali a senior SYL official said that his youth association is intended to educate more than 1000 Somali youths in sport, mechanics, tailoring and computer by the end of the year. “We want them to be professionals in these different fields so that they may be able to serve for the country and people in the near future” Farah noted.
He added that SYL’s programs are prioritizing two sectors which are to fight against youth unemployment and protecting young people from being monopolized by war-mongers and terrorists in the country.
