A total of 450 undocumented migrants were held across Turkey on Thursday, according to security sources.
In the northwestern province of Edirne, 102 migrants were rounded up in Yenikadin, Orhaniye, Bosnakoy and Meric districts, said the coast guard sources, who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to the media.
The migrants were from Egypt, Iraq, Libya, Somalia and Pakistan.
In the northwestern port city of Canakkale, 39 in a sinking rubber boat were rescued by the Turkish coast guards.
Separately, 302 undocumented migrants — including Afghan, Pakistani and Bangladeshi nationals — were rounded up in Ipekyolu district of eastern Van province after they attempted to illegally enter Turkey, the sources said.
Turkey has been a main route for refugees trying to cross into Europe, especially since 2011 when the Syrian civil war began.
Among the migrants held in 2017 in Turkey, the majority came from Pakistan — around 15,000 — followed by Afghans at around 12,000. Syrians totaled about 10,000. There has been a 60 percent increase in migrant flow since 2016. The number was 31,000 in 2016.

US allows hundreds of Somalis to stay until at least March 2020

$

Friday July 20, 2018Nearly 500 Somalis who escaped terrorism and drought will be allowed to remain in the US until at least March 2020, the US homeland security department announced on Thursday.Concerns had been raised that the administration would cancel the temporary protected status (TPS) program for Somalis because of Trump’s anti-immigrant policies and the decision to end TPS status for more than 428,250 others. But the DHS granted them permission to stay temporarily, owing to the “ongoing armed conflict and extraordinary conditions” in Somalia. This decision is a relief for TPS holders such as Yasir, who fled Somalia after being kidnapped and tortured by the al-Qaida-affiliated extremist group al-Shabaab. “I’m scared of going back to Somalia and being killed by al-Shabaab,” Yasir told the Guardian.asir, 29, said that in 2008, he was walking in Mogadishu when two men came up behind him and hit him. He was knocked unconscious. He woke up in a room with the two men, who he said identified themselves as members of al-Shabaab and tried to coerce him into joining their group.“They told me if I don’t work with them, they will kill me and they know where I live,” Yasir said.Ads By Google He went into hiding while he tried to find a way out, occasionally dressing in women’s clothes and covering his face in disguise. An aunt eventually gave him money so he could pay someone to get him out. He doesn’t know how long it took him to get to the US, which he did by traveling through several countries before crossing the border in 2009.“I was happy to be alive,” Yasir said. “I was happy to be somewhere where justice means something.”He lived in the US undocumented until 2012, when Temporary Protected Status (TPS) was redesignated for Somalia. TPS protects foreign nationals already in the US when civil unrest, violence or natural disasters erupt in their home country.TPS can either be redesignated, which allows a new group of people to apply for it; renewed, with allows people who already have it to stay longer; or terminated, which typically gives people more than a year to find a way to stay in the US or leave. The homeland security department renewed, but did not redesignate, TPS for Somalis on Thursday. The homeland security department said in a statement it made this decision because the “ongoing armed conflict and extraordinary and temporary conditions that support Somalia’s current designation for TPS continue to exist”.With TPS, instead of living in the shadows, Yasir was able to work, get a driver’s license and open a bank account. He is now married to a US citizen and has a seven-year-old American son. He said he doesn’t know what has happened to his family and friends in Somalia, and whether they are dead or alive.“I’ve seen countries losing TPS and I’ve been scared I’m going to lose mine and be deported back home,” Yasir said. The Trump administration has unleashed a torrent of measures to slow immigration and remove people from the US, including terminating TPS for six of the 10 countries covered by it when he took office. This has left more than 428,250 people from countries including Nicaragua, El Salvador and Sudan forced to find a way to stay in the US or return to their home country as early as December of this year.TPS has been extended for more than 8,100 people from South Sudan, Syria and Yemen. The president insulted the largest Somali American community, in Minnesota, two days before being elected president. “Everybody’s reading about the disaster taking place in Minnesota,” Trump said at a rally in November 2017.Despite the escalating conflict with al-Shabaab, and the terrorist group’s targeting of people who return to the country, the US has dramatically increased deportations there since late 2016. In fiscal year 2016, 198 Somalis were deported, rising to 521 in 2017.And in December, more than 90 Somali men and women were held shackled on an airplane for nearly 48 hours during a failed attempt to deport them from the US that went as far Dakar, Senegal, before returning to the US.There have been bipartisan efforts in the House and Senate to encourage the homeland security department to redesignate and extend TPS for Somalia. Senators Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat from Minnesota, and Rob Portman, a Republican from Ohio, sent a letter on Monday to the homeland security secretary, Kirstjen Nielsen, and the secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, urging them to extend the protection. The senators wrote: “Conditions in Somalia remain dire, and armed conflict continues to be a threat to the Somali people.”    Yasir’s name has been changed to protect his identity

The Latest: Advocates say extension for Somalis not enough

Friday July 20, 2018The Latest on the Trump administration's decision to extend protected status for Somalis (all times local):6 p.m.Advocates for Somali nationals who are living in the United States say they are disappointed that the Trump administration chose to extend — and not redesignate — a special protected status for Somalis. The Department of Homeland Security said Thursday it would renew temporary protected status for about 500 people because of armed conflict and other extraordinary conditions. The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the International Rescue Committee and Muslim Advocates all say they are relieved that about 500 Somalis will be able to re-register to extend their protected status for 18 months. But they say that if the administration would have redesignated the status, more than 1,000 Somali nationals could have enrolled.Ads By Google The International Rescue Committee says extending the status sends a signal that the administration recognizes Somalia is unsafe, but failing to redesignate the status leaves some Somalis at risk.4:51 p.m.The Trump administration is continuing the special immigration status granted for nearly two decades to people from Somalia. The Department of Homeland Security said Thursday that it would renew temporary protected status for about 500 people because of armed conflict and other extraordinary conditions. As many as 437,000 immigrants affected by extreme violence or disaster had the status, which allowed them to work. DHS has discontinued the status for nearly all the groups, including Honduras, El Salvador, Sudan, Nicaragua and Haiti. The department recently continued the special immigration status for Yemen.President Donald Trump's supporters note the protections were never meant to be permanent. Many Somalis have settled in Minnesota. Community and immigration advocates have said returning to Somalia would be a death sentence for some and would separate families.

Friday July 20, 2018He has however warned parents who might try to block their children from getting vaccinated on religion grounds saying that the government is determined to see that the virus is out of Kenya completely.Parents who might block our officers from vaccinating their children are doing injustice to their children, the government is determined to wipe out polio in Kenya and resistance is denying the child a chance to the right to medication Tole added. An anti-polio vaccination campaign launched in Lamu County on Thursday seeks to cover 21,000 children including thousands from Somalia, officials announced.Medical services and vaccination cover in Somalia which has been at war for about three decades is poor and most of the latest polio discoveries in Kenya have been traced to refugees and migrants entering Kenya from the Horn of Africa nation.According to Dr Victor Tole, the director of medical services for Lamu County said on Thursday that children from Somalia are among the 21,000 children targeted in the vaccination effort. He said medical workers have been sent to give the vaccination in far-flung areas and targeted towns in Somalia.Tole said that the initiative is to make sure that the virus does not cross over to Kenya through Kiunga as many people who live in Raskiamboni do business in Kiunga, citing that if there is no vaccination done, then the virus will be spread in the area, spreading to other parts of the county due to movement.Officials said the exercise will cover children in Ras Kamboni and other towns of Somalia close to Kenya's Kiunga to avoid the polio virus spreading from the war-torn nation."We have undertaken the initiative of extending the polio vaccination to Somalia so as to prevent the virus from spreading to Kenya," said Dr Tole adding that although Lamu is vulnerable to infection because of its proximity to Somalia not a single case of the virus has been detected in the Kenyan border county. Lamu is among 11 counties that the ministry of medical services will have polio vaccine done due to its closeness with Somalia."We have placed focus on Somalia since there are no health facilities and if a virus is detected and the children are not vaccinated against the virus, then they cross over to Kenya through the borders, our children whose immune system is low or have not been vaccinated will definitely get infected with the virus," Dr Tole added.Areas of Lamu East whose mobility is hampered by impassible road due to numerous Improvised Explosive devices being placed on the road making it dangerous, the ministry together with multiagency team joined hands in taking the service in the whole of Basuba ward.He has however warned parents who might try to block their children from getting vaccinated on religion grounds saying that the government is determined to see that the virus is out of Kenya completely.
